Biography of Author: Charles Dickens (1812-1870), was born in England, the second of eight children of a debt ridden government clerk. At age 10 he was sent to work in a London factory. This experience upset him so greatly and left such an impression on him that he later created suffering and abandoned children as the heroes of many of his novels. He finally broke free of the slave factory and returned to school. He became a newspaper reporter, a job that helped him to observe people and to create scenes that live in his readersââ¬â¢ memories. With the appearance of The Pickwick Papers in 1836 and 1837, at age 24, Charleston became the most popular novelist in England.
